Sofia, a rising ninth grader, comes to Explo at Wellesley with a life goal already forming in her mind: she wants to start an advertising company. She's taking Creating a Business and Commercial Marketing to help make that dream a reality.

Today in Creating a Business we started to sell our products: beach balls and Frisbees. I've never done anything like it — not even a lemonade stand — so it's been a great experience to learn about marketing and inventory and those things. The hardest part was figuring out the prices. We have a table set up on the Quad and have posters set up all over campus. Making the posters was actually one of my favorite parts. We each got to make one of our own. For mine, I kept it very simple, with not a lot of things on it. I only told the viewer the most important things, and showed them quality.

I actually want to start a marketing company of my own one day, so I liked to get the chance to practice. That's why I took Creating a Business and Commercial Marketing, and why I came to Explo to do them. I've learned a lot, but I learn a lot in school, too. The difference between Explo and school, in one word, is freedom. Even though everyone is comfortable, or maybe because everyone is comfortable, you get to do what you want to do — like making my first sale.
