Colby, a rising junior, has ambitious dreams to work with juveniles within the legal system. And, her dream started right here at EXPLO.
My favorite way to describe EXPLO when people ask me about summer plans is, "I’m going to the best summer program ever." Because it’s academic in a nontraditional way. There are classes and activities you really cannot get anywhere else. Last year I took classes that really sparked my interest in law, which inspired me to join the mock trial team at school, which pointed me down the path I’m following now. So really, it all started here.
I really want to be a juvenile probation officer when I grow up. When I was little I always wanted to be a teacher, but while I was on the mock trial team I just found a love of law. I want to work at the source — directly with the kids — rather than to try to relieve their charges. That way, I can work to rehabilitate the juveniles that didn’t have a stable family or those who didn’t think there was a way out.
I really want to make a difference. I want to work with kids. Helping to change their lives would just be so rewarding. My experience here and the classes I’m taking have made me more excited to become a probation officer and continue my studies in this field.
