Matthew was hoping to leave EXPLO as a better leader. At the end of week two, he already realizes he'll be taking home so much more.
I’m taking Leadership Skills and Event Management because I’m playing football and I want to be a great leader for my team. I play tight end and defensive end. I have a lot to offer my team in terms of skill, and I want to be able to help people unlock their own skill by being a good leader. Before I started playing football, I would play a lot of other sports just for fun. A lot of the people I played with were older and better than me at playing. But by watching them and learning how they played, I not only became better at the sport but their leadership helped shape who I am as a person. That’s how good leadership works.
Here at EXPLO, I have a friend named Charlie. He’s really good at throwing a frisbee. He knows where you want the frisbee to land. When he throws a frisbee it’s exactly the kind of throw that you were expecting. I got better because of him. We were also in the Intro to Acoustic Guitar Workshop together and neither of us really knew how to play before we took it. We started learning together. I think that friendship helped me learn because he is a good leader and would offer to help me when I needed it.
I’m going to take a lot of what I’ve learned here home with me. I took home a glove that I got from my Criminal Investigations class just to remind me of all that I learned and all the fun I had in that course. I also already took a balloon home from Leadership Skills and Event Management. We had a challenge where we were blindfolded but needed to avoid stepping on balloons so someone had to guide us. Any moment or anything that I can remember of this place is coming with me.
