From learning about Girls in the Media, to Graffiti Art and Figure Drawing, Sophie is all about self expression and having the freedom to do so. Read on to see how Explo is helping her to express herself.
I’m taking Girls in the Media. I think of myself as a feminist. I don’t often like how girls are displayed in advertisements. I’m a girl and I think it’s important to stand up for our rights. I don’t like being put down just because I’m a girl. When I play soccer, I don’t really get passed to. I’m on one soccer team that’s all girls, but during my free time I go to the gym at my school to play soccer with the guys. It has gotten better the longer I’ve been on the team. I notice that I’ve been more included. Although I don’t really go to clubs and stuff involving feminism, I will advocate for my friends and myself.
I like expressing myself through art. That’s why I love Explo. I’ve loved it since the first time I came here. I think they do a really good job at teaching you to express yourself along with all the techniques of art.
I’m also taking Figure Drawing. I’m really into art and I’d love to learn more about it. I was thinking of maybe applying to an art school for high school. I like drawing the human body in Figure Drawing and drawing nature, just whatever is around me really. I live in a city, so I like to draw the skyline. I use a lot of blue — I like to use pencil and colored pencils. For certain projects, I’ll use different materials though. I’m learning to use charcoal and water coloring right now, which I’m really enjoying. I’ve had the opportunity to take a lot of art classes in my three years at Explo. I took Ceramics last year and I’m also taking Graffiti Art this year.
These are all ways that I get to express myself. I like expressing myself through art. That’s why I love Explo. I’ve loved it since the first time I came here. I think they do a really good job at teaching you to express yourself along with all the techniques of art.
