Why we unplug—The EXPLO technology policy explained

Written by Moira Kelly, EXPLO President | October 10, 2025

The EXPLO technology policy is device-free. Students unplug to connect with real people and places. We collect phones and devices at the beginning of the program and keep them stowed away—freeing students to start building independence through summer programs. Teen mental health and phones don't always go together. This pause opens space for deeper friendships, creativity, and meaningful summer moments.

Key Takeaways:

  • EXPLO collects phones and smart devices and safely stows them away for the duration of the program.
  • Unplugging helps students build independence, confidence, and stronger friendships.
  • A pause on screen time helps break the negative link between teen mental health and phones, supporting emotional well-being and real-world connection.
  • Students are still able to connect with home through structured call times.
  • This tech-free time is often one of the most powerful parts of your tween or teen’s summer.

Why does EXPLO limit technology?

Because students deserve a break. Constant pings, likes, and scrolls don’t leave much room for creativity, self-discovery, or joy. The EXPLO technology policy helps students unplug from devices and plug into real life—a rare opportunity in today’s world.

By limiting screen time, we create space for presence, curiosity, and connection. And it works: students tell us that being off their phones is surprisingly freeing.

How does the EXPLO technology policy work?

Here’s what families and students can expect:

  • Devices are collected and stored safely during the duration of the program.
  • Students can still call home using campus phones during scheduled times.
  • Families can always reach staff directly in an emergency.

This consistent structure removes pressure around social media, texting, and comparison—letting students focus on the moment. The EXPLO technology policy enhances kids’ experiences—and supports them in building independence through summer programs.

What does the research say about the benefits of unplugging?

Time away from screens doesn’t just reduce distractions. The issues around teen mental health and phones are real and complicated. The screen-time-reducing EXPLO technology policy helps students:

  • Trust their own judgment
  • Boost confidence through real-world conversations
  • Strengthen teen mental health and reduce anxiety
  • Improve focus, sleep, and mood
  • Form deeper, face-to-face friendships
  • Build independence by navigating life offline
  • Create their own coping strategies for managing challenges

These outcomes are especially important for middle and high schoolers, who are developing identity and emotional resilience. That’s why building independence through summer programs like EXPLO matters so much.

How does this support teen mental health?

Teens today are more connected—and more stressed—than ever. Social media can create anxiety, FOMO, and an overwhelming pressure to perform. In short,  teen mental health and phones benefit from balance. A screen-free environment gives students a break from that cycle.

Studies show that reducing screen time improves teen mental health: fewer depressive symptoms, better sleep, and improved attention. The EXPLO technology policy allows us to pair tech-free time with hands-on learning, creative exploration, and genuine social connection—giving students a healthier mental reset.

Do students actually like being unplugged?

Yes — often more than they expect.

Some are hesitant at first. But by the end of the session, many students say unplugging was one of the best parts of their summer. They felt more relaxed, more focused, and more themselves.

"I think it's a benefit because it really puts me in a situation where I'm really going out of my comfort zone to find new things that I like. So I'm meeting new people, and with the phone, I probably wouldn't have done that. It just allows you to be more daring, to be more bold. I'm taking new opportunities, not only in class, but with other people."

At EXPLO, feelings can't be expressed through emojis or GIFs—they’re shared through real conversations and active listening. Whether participating in house challenges, sharing stories as they walk the shores of Lake Waban, or connecting over a meal, students can be fully immersed in each moment.

This is the core reasoning behind the EXPLO technology policy: when you take away the pressure of likes and followers, students rediscover what they really enjoy—and who they really are.

At EXPLO we're not anti-technology—we're pro-connection! By creating this intentional break from the digital world, we're giving your tweens and teens the space to develop essential life skills, forge meaningful friendships, and build independence through summer programs.
