When deciding which courses to take this summer, Karlie decided to take one she was very comfortable with and one she was not. This summer, she believes stepping out of her comfort zone will help her reach her goals.
My favorite show is Grey’s Anatomy and one of my favorite characters on the show is Cristina Yang. One of her specialties is cardioplasty and when I saw that I became super interested and I’ve been hooked ever since. Now, I want to become a Cardiovascular Surgeon when I’m older. It’s been my main goal in life. My grandpa is an OB-GYN and my mom is a nurse. Having those two main people in my life who love their jobs in a medical field has really influenced me. So when I was picking courses, Medical Careers was an easy choice.
My other course was a bit more of a challenging decision. I decided to take Leadership + Event Planning because I’m really shy and learning to become a better leader is my main goal this summer. I think I have it in me to become a leader but my shyness makes me worried about things like leadership. I think this course is going to help me open up and become better at the things that I struggle with, like public speaking. Last year when I came to EXPLO I was extremely shy and I became less so throughout the summer. It’s easy to make friends when you just open up more and can introduce yourself. Being at EXPLO gives you such a welcoming community. It’s so easy to become a part of because there’s no judgement.
This is my second year at EXPLO, but my first at Wellesley. At Wheaton there’s more of a structure. I’ve heard that here we have a bit more time to decide what we are going to do. The structure doesn’t disappear, but it loosens as you get older through EXPLO and you have more responsibilities. I’m most excited to go to the Vil and go shopping with my friends. I also want to meet people from all over the world.
