EXPLO at Wellesley: Chasing the Sun with Gabi

A natural early bird, ninth grader Gabi loves the Early Morning Running, Yoga, and Insanity Clubs. She recommends everyone try waking up early at least once, if only to take in the beautiful view of the lake in the morning.

I love running but going the whole distance around the lake is kind of hard, so I’m super proud of myself because I ran more than half of it yesterday. It’s so much fun doing a class; it wakes you up, gets you energized. For the morning clubs you get down to the quad by 6:30 a.m., and there will be usually two instructors for running — one for the front of the pack, one for the back — so you can run at your own pace. Because this is only the second day, and you can’t do three clubs in two days, I’ve only been able to do running and Insanity so far, but I plan on doing yoga tomorrow with my friends.

I’m not a sleeper, so I wake up early. But I like it because you get things done in the morning. You are more productive — unless you're still half-asleep zombie, which can happen. Because I get very bad migraines, I definitely need to be active, and the morning clubs here help. Sleeping well, exercising, keeping your body healthy, drinking lots of water, making sure you wear your sunscreen...the staff here are very mindful of that, and it really helps.

Even if you don't usually get up early, try it once, or try the club that makes you happy. If you want to be calmer or you just want to relax: yoga. If you want to see the beautiful scenery around the lake: run. Because unless you're in sailing or other water sports, you don't get to see that part of the lake in the morning and it’s just amazingly beautiful. If you can't go as fast, tell the instructors so they are aware. Then run a little, walk a little — enjoy the scenery.
