Staff Profile: Lisa, Artist + EXPLO Instructor

A conversation with Lisa, an instructor at EXPLO at Sarah Lawrence this summer. Artistic and courageous, Lisa is excited to start teaching students.

As an artist

This is Lisa — well, her hands, anyway. She has been playing piano for 14 years and is extremely well-versed in music as well as musical theatre. She is also a composer and a member of the Staff Band here at EXPLO. But her talents don't stop there.

Lisa is also an incredibly talented oil painter. Check out one of her snowscapes:

She even directs films and edits sound and video.

As A Learner

Lisa graduated from SCAD, the Savannah College of Art and Design, with a degree in Film and Sound Design.

She learned a lot from her time in art school, but many life lessons have developed from her hobbies as well. Skydiving, she says, has taught her to tackle fears head-on.

"I went skydiving for the first time to get over my fear of airplanes. I'm terrified of turbulence and flying. So, I thought if I jumped out of one, that my fears would go away."

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for Lisa. She is still very afraid of planes. But she discovered — through that fear and through being pushed out of her comfort zone — that she has a love for the freedom she feels after she jumps.

Lisa wants to get her skydiving license and keep learning how to jump in other areas of her life.

As an instructor at EXPLO

In her courses this summer at EXPLO, Lisa is most excited about engaging with the energy of the students and helping them to develop their talents.

"I remember myself when I was in high school and in theatre and acting programs, and I remember how passionate I was. I am so excited to meet the young artists and performers and help them grow."

Lisa dreams of someday becoming a university professor of art where she can engage with this kind of passion every day.
