Surgical Interventions students were thrilled to participate in a Surgical Techniques Session with Dr. Richard King, Medical Director for Trauma at Central Maine Healthcare and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. King talked with students about his own medical training and career journey. After discussing a real patient case of a gunshot wound to "the box", Dr. King, demonstrated how the lungs and chest tubes work using a simple model and then led students through a chest tube simulation and heart repair surgery on a cat specimen. Special attention was given to opening up the chest cavity and using suturing techniques to repair the torn cardiac tissue.
