Explo is thrilled to announce that Dr. Deborah Hirsch has joined the Explo Board of Trustees.

Dr. Deborah Hirsch is the Executive Director of the Teaching and Learning Lab (TLL), an initiative of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The TLL is developing a competency-based graduate program to prepare middle and high school STEM teachers and eventually school leaders.

Moira Kelly, Explo’s Executive Director and President, looks forward to her work with Explo’s newest trustee. As Kelly explains, “Dr. Hirsch and her colleagues are on the cutting edge of what it means to prepare highly effective teachers. She shares our firmly held belief that good teaching really matters. Plus, she has such wide and deep experience in higher education that there is no doubt that she will be an important voice in helping us forge our future.”

Prior to joining TLL, Dr. Hirsch served as Vice President for Development and Director of External Relations at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts, where she was previously Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Before that, Dr. Hirsch was the Executive Director of the Boston Higher Education Partnership and Director of the New England Resource Center for Higher Education. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and Boston College, has presented widely, and has published numerous articles on college access and success, student retention, civic engagement, and service learning.

Dr. Hirsch and her colleagues are on the cutting edge of what it means to prepare highly effective teachers. She shares our firmly held belief that good teaching really matters.

Dr. Hirsch was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick to the Public Education Nominating Council (PENC), and was appointed as a hearing officer for the Board of Bar Overseers in Boston. In the past, she served on the Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council, including one year as Chair; at the end of her term, she was appointed a Director of the Harvard Alumni Association. Dr. Hirsch is also a mentor for Year Up Boston, where she provides students with professional advice as well as help with career planning and educational support.

Dr. Hirsch graduated summa cum laude from Boston University, holds master’s degrees in education from the State University of New York at Buffalo and Harvard University and a doctorate in education from Harvard University.
