Meet Toby from Connecticut

Toby reflects on Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power's guest lecture to EXPLO at Yale students.

Sabrina Polin

After a presentation from Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, this rising sophomore is coming away with valuable career insights and a new outlook on life.

Although I disagree with Ambassador Samantha Power on many issues, it was still interesting to hear and learn from her because obviously she has a lot of experience. It was a unique perspective on the way the world operates and how all the political intricacies around the world affect each other.

What she talked about shows that you have to consider the impact of what you do and say in general. She was saying she didn’t think she’d be able to work for Donald Trump and to represent him, and I respect that because the things you say don’t just affect you, they affect all the people around you and anyone you have a relationship with. That really made me consider how to act on a deeper level. Essentially, there’s often a greater impact on the things we say and do than what we realize. Obviously, that’s to a greater extent when we’re talking about the President of the United States, but it can really apply to people in every day life.

This experience and the knowledge I’ve accrued from it will help me decide whether to pursue a career in politics. I like solving problems, and I feel like solving problems that have a significant impact on people would be very satisfying for me. Even when we do simulations in the EXPLO Foreign Affairs program, I get very passionate. So, I can imagine myself doing that and being very impactful.
