This is my first year at Explo. I was looking for summer opportunities and I really wanted to come to the United States, I’ve never been before, and I thought Explo would be a great opportunity to do that. I’m from a very political region and that prompted my interest for foreign affairs, so I felt like this was a great opportunity to see the U.S., talk about foreign policy issues, learn, and have a good time.

Part of the reason I wanted to come here is to make sure foreign affairs is something I want to do every day, in the future, because when you’re choosing a career, you need to know you’re going to be excited about this. You’re going to wake up in the morning and want to go to work in a specific field. This proved I do want to get involved with foreign affairs when I grow up. So this is great — I know what I want to do in college and my life!

Before I came here, I didn’t realize how much I was going to learn. And it’s not like learning through homework, it’s from the people around you. What people say, and their own experiences. In class, we were introduced to so much. I was talking to a friend who’s in college and we’re doing some of the same things she’s doing in college. This is great — I’m doing this in a summer program!

It’s definitely the kind of knowledge I’d like to pass around. I think a lot of people don’t like to be engaged in politics. I understand that; sometimes things happen around the world that are really horrible and we choose to look the other way. But when these things happen, they’re happening to us and they affect us and we can’t just ignore that.
