Fifteen-year-old Lionel has enjoyed getting to experience EXPLO’s teaching methods. He shares with us a little about his goal to become a history teacher and how that manifested.

Nathan Hale is a huge history icon. Not only that, though, he’s also a teacher and the hero of our state. I can’t be sure, but I think he went to Yale. I’m that one kid who actually enjoys history class. It’s my favorite type of class; I took eight of them this past year.

I want to be a history teacher because my favorite teacher inspired me to want to learn. I want to be that person for someone else. I want to be able to carry that on — almost like a legacy.

I really enjoy the different approach to teaching here. The instructors are much closer to our age and we’re able to connect with them one-on-one.  Because of this, they seem to understand our learning needs in a way that many other teachers sometimes overlook. The smaller class sizes also allow us to have more of an individualized experience.
