Joaquim is a first timer at Explo who has been widening his horizons by meeting Explo students from all over the world, going on trips to new places, and getting hands-on experience in his fields of interest: debate and economics.

Currently I’m taking Debate and Economics. I like them a lot and I’m learning a lot; there’s so much stuff I didn’t know. In Economics, one hands-on thing we did was we got stocks and money and then practiced trading stocks for money. In the end [of the activity], we see who has the most stocks and money. [In] Debate, they had two people come in from the Oxford Union, which is the second-oldest debate team in the world.

The trips here are pretty cool. There is a wide variety that you don’t find in most places. So, you could go to New York City or Washington D.C. My favorite was Blue Man Group. That was pretty weird and cool; it keeps you entertained.

I’ve met a lot of people from around the world [here at Explo]. A lot of them speak three languages, which is pretty amazing. You kind of get what people are like everywhere — not just Americans, but kids around the world — see what their experiences have been and what’s normal for them. You get an appreciation for culture; you kind of understand more about the world. You’re kind of globalized.

Explo isn’t like most other places. I definitely got a lot more out of the classes than I thought I would when I first signed up for them.
