I have met the best friends that I will ever have in my life here. In the two weeks we’ve been here, they’ve been the most supportive people; we exchange stories and it’s so different from the other friendships I’ve had. It’s like a magic thing that happens. They have new things to tell me, and during my EXPLO experience I’ve learned so much and about what’s happening in their countries or their families. Also, talking with those I don’t spend as much time with, I've come to realize you never really know what’s happening in someone else’s life. That’s very important to me; my eyes have been opened.

There are many things here at EXPLO that I can’t do at home. I can just walk out to the street and go to the dining hall or to go out to eat with friends. The situation in Venezuela is so insecure and you can’t just walk on the streets, unless it’s to school and back. This is the first time I’ve felt this kind of freedom, to be able to do whatever I want during free time with my friends in New Haven.

I’ve traveled before, but I’ve never been alone without my family. The first day at EXPLO I was so scared, I was nearly crying. I remember the first moment I met my friends, though, and they made me feel comfortable and like it was going to be okay. This is an amazing opportunity that my parents gave me. I feel freedom, but I feel secure. I love it.
