In his Songwriting + Composition class, rising sophomore Carlos is blending the familiar with the unfamiliar, driven by a desire to learn more about what he loves — music making.
It’s magical to be able to make my own music. I’m amazed by how music works and how there’s a formula and structure to most forms. Being able to make music makes me feel like I have the potential to be like Mozart or Beethoven. I aspire to be a great composer like that. I don’t think classical music gets the attention that it should be getting, and I kind of want to bring light to that.
I’ve learned so much here already, like how to write lyrics and craft a meaning behind a song. I had never really expressed myself through words before, so this is truly a new experience for me, and it's opened up more of my potential.
The song I’m composing for my Songwriting + Composition class is about unity, since EXPLO is made up of people from across the world. My message is that we’re all a big family and we can make a change in the world. I was inspired by EXPLO originally, but the theme extends beyond our campus in terms of a global community on a large scale.
