For this rising junior, her third year at EXPLO is a year of self-discovery and delving into her passions — like painting — that she doesn't have the opportunity to explore at school.

I don’t do a lot of art back home, because I do engineering in school. You can only take one elective, so there was no room for something like painting. EXPLO is kind of my only place to be able to do my art. I want to go into engineering because it’s all about solving things, but art is just using a different part of the brain. I’ve always enjoyed painting and drawing, since I was little.

I’ve learned new techniques this year, but I also think I’ve found my own personal technique. My painting technique has changed dramatically from what it was last year. I’m finding myself more. One day I tried something new; instead of using a brush in class, I just went at my canvas with a spatula of paint so I could get more volume and texture. It was so amazing to find that style in me. My piece is actually going to be in the art show, and it’s amazing to know I’ve done something I’m proud of that will be out in the world for everyone to see.
