Mari Armei

An ambitious learner, Amanpreet has always been interested in law and history. Recently, she discovered that thanks to her love for learning, she doesn't have to choose just one path, but can connect many of her passions.

My first love is law. I am very passionate about the interaction with the government. I believe citizenship is so important, and the responsibilities and rights you have as a human on this earth and under this government are incredibly important to how we function as both a society and as a democracy. I believe that even if you don’t believe the same thing that I do, I think there are some core principles in every person. Every American, I believe, believes in liberty. The reason we have differences within our culture and political system is because we are not sure exactly how to reach those goals. But I think that all people have those core principles of what they want and what they believe their government should do for them.

Within law, whenever we are talking to people, we are sort of using psychology to get a witness to say something that they believe in. I think as a lawyer, you really have to understand people, because that’s who you’re representing. A lot of people think that perhaps law is objective and I don’t really believe in that. I think it’s subjective in a lot of ways. A lot of society has been influenced by law and law has been influenced by society. They’re intertwined.

It’s not fair to label yourself. You should always give yourself a chance to grow and learn different things. And see what you’re interested in, because they might connect.

I love most of my subjects in school, so it’s kind of hard for me to see what I could bring together and correlate. I want to be able to find ways to bring in other passions I have with law, because I think it is a variable subject. My mother’s a doctor and my uncle is a neuroscientist who has talked to me about the brain. And my mother has been a really big influence in my life. I’ve always had a lot of respect for science and I find people fascinating.

I’ve always loved watching human behavior and understanding what humans are capable of. I actually did an internship at Columbia University in behavioral psychology. We tried to correlate how memory and communication interact with each other. I was looking at other studies that also mentioned the brain and they also talked about how the brain sort of relates to different aspects of your being and how your memory and your mind work. I found the brain to be incredibly fascinating, because I think from my love of humanities I started a love for science of the brain. Because I found them to be so connected.

It’s so important to have an open mind. Through law and through reading those legal opinions, I want to become a more open person and understand more people. I would want to continue law, but I recently also found my neuroscience passion. And I am also interested in psychology a lot. I think it’s really fascinating how the brain and justice work together and how we, as humans, create our society and live in it.

At Explo, I really got a sense of how interconnected so many different things are. And I sort of love that about science and life. I’ve learned as a person to be more as a Renaissance Woman and sort of allow myself to explore so many other things instead of restricting myself. You know how people will always ask, “What’s your favorite subject in school?” I never really knew, so I just picked one. But now I think I have allowed myself to think it’s okay that I like everything and that I love learning in general. And I think Explo and the idea of exploration are so important, because you don’t want to be stuck in a box, where you’re not sure what you want to do and then just label yourself as something. It’s not fair to label yourself. You should always give yourself a chance to grow and learn different things. And see what you’re interested in, because they might connect.
