Meet Lucy from New York

Lucy from New York talks about double sessions

Ally Marcino

For three summers now, Lucy has come to Explo as a six-week student, meaning she stays for both sessions. And each session is a totally unique experience.

I do two sessions every summer I come to Explo. People may think that it’s like doing the exact same thing all over again, but it’s really a completely different experience. Sometimes in between sessions, you get scared and start to worry that the next one might not be as good or that you won’t make friends. But it always ends up being just as amazing, if not better.

I always do different classes both sessions. At this point, I’ve gotten to take almost all the classes that I came in really wanting to take. Now I get to take things that I’ve never really done before, but sound really cool. Last year, I took classes in things that I knew for sure that I was interested in and do regularly at home.

But this year, I did the Cooking with Chemistry class. I’ve never really made any of the things that we made in that class and it was so cool. It wasn’t even just trying a new subject, but also the trying new foods part. We made some really weird stuff! We made these gel things that were really interesting and an avocado chocolate mousse that I had my doubts about — but it was really great!

I feel like whatever you do at Explo, it’s going to be good. You might learn something new and realize that you really love something that you’ve never tried before. I know people who switched out of a course and ended up with a different course that they didn’t know much about, but ended up really liking it.

The reason I keep wanting to come back is really more about the community and the people that come and work at Explo. Everyone is really welcoming. I didn’t know it was possible to make such great friends in only three weeks, to the point where everyone is almost crying on the last day when we have to leave. Some people continue to come back and you get to be friends with them for many years.
