Meet Liberty from England

Fourteen-year-old Liberty has always wanted to attend a summer camp, but says that EXPLO is even better because it's both fun and educational.

Liberty loves debating and wants to become a lawyer one day. She's always wanted to attend a summer camp, but says that EXPLO is even better because it's both fun and educational.

I’m taking the Mock Trial course, which I love so much. We are working on a very interesting case about hacking. We’ve also learned some really cool things, like how to object and and how to do direct- and cross-examinations. People get to play witnesses during the classes, which is just so much fun because you get to act out all the characters.

At home I do debate, and I’ve actually gotten to debate here, too, in a different format. To be honest, I just like arguing with people and I want to be good at it! When I came here I was a bit unsure who I want to be in the future, but I love my Mock Trial class so much that I think I want to become a lawyer now. It’s really interesting and I would get to argue a lot but also help people. Someone asked the question during our class: “What if you were defending someone you know is guilty?” But it’s important that everyone has the opportunity to go through the fair justice system because that’s what helps people who aren’t guilty.

I’ve always wanted to come to a summer camp and I’m really glad that I came to EXPLO because besides being fun it’s also very educational. I’ve made loads of new friends. My roommate is from Guatemala and obviously England and Guatemala are pretty far away from each other. I study Spanish at school, so I’ve been practicing my Spanish with her and I’ve also learned a lot from her about Guatemalan culture that I otherwise wouldn’t know about. I just want to make the most of my time here and try to do as many different things as possible that I wouldn’t get a chance to elsewhere.
