Paging Dr. Kika! When this global citizen is not fulfilling her wanderlust between living in the U.K., Puerto Rico, and Holland, you'll find her brushing up on her anatomy or athletics to heighten her body and mind!

I’ve always been interested in medicine from what I’ve seen on TV but haven’t had a chance to actually experience it. That’s why, when I saw the medical careers course at Explo and how they simulate real hospital situations, I got really excited and signed up for that class and it’s exactly what I’d hoped it would be.

My dream would be to become a trauma surgeon. You’re there on the scene and have to be so focused and be able to deal with stress and you’re actually able to save someone’s life. Right now, we’re simulating an emergency room so we have receptionists, doctors, interns, and nurses, and we’re all getting a feel of what it’s like to work in an actual hospital on busy days when everything feels crowded and hectic. We’ve focused on learning how to triage, which is a system that differentiates the most in need patients from patients who aren’t as in need of emergency medicine.

I feel like all of my courses at Explo have been helpful in reaching my goal of becoming a trauma surgeon. My Criminal Investigations course has helped me see things from different perspectives and use even the smallest piece of evidence when solving cases, like I would in solving a medical mystery. I’m also taking a lot of athletics for my workshops, which help me have a firsthand idea about what are the most common injuries from sports — so I can have a better idea at fixing those injuries.

I’ve learned so much from being at Explo this summer. For one, I’ve learned to never be shy and always open yourself up to others, because that’s the best way to connect with people and make new friends. Also, everyone here is so international! I’ve met people from Haiti, France, Lebanon, and everyone from all over. It’s an amazing contrast of people around the world. Getting to go to Explo with more people has taught me about so many more cultures and ideas that I can keep with me forever.
