Meet Kevin from Massachusetts

Kevin talks about playing piano and fencing

Ally Marcino

At home, Kevin is a burgeoning pianist and fencer. But at Explo, he is discovering new and different interests and talents that he never thought he would.

I like fencing and playing piano. I have had a few piano recitals at churches and such, and my favorite song to play is called “Nocturne” by John Field. I started playing about five years ago, and I try to practice every day. I definitely want to continue playing. I love playing, and if I could keep doing it, that would be awesome. As I get older, it’s harder to fit in time to play, though. Some days I just don’t have time to fit it in. I play whenever I get the chance, though.

What fills up most of my time now is fencing. I fence four or five times a week for two or three hours at a time. I’m in a fencing club and we have training period four times a week and then I practice extra at home. I have competed a bit. I’m not going to say that I’m that good, but I do like it and I’ve been to a couple small tournaments. What keeps me motivated is that I have friends doing it too, and when they are improving, I want to improve, too. I want to keep up with them. As I watch them get better, I want to get better.

I don’t play piano or fence here at Explo, but I love it here and I’m having so much fun. I’m meeting a ton of new people and trying a bunch of things that I’ve never tried before. Like, I’ve never shot an arrow. But I did archery last week and it was really fun. I met a lot of friends doing that. I’m learning a ton of new stuff here. My favorite is definitely the archery, though. There was this one day when we were having a small competition and I was able to hit the target a ton of times. I think I only missed once. It made me feel really great, and like I was getting really good at it. My school has an archery club and since I started archery here, I think I want to join it at school now.

I think Explo inspires that in a lot of kids. Explo has a lot of different activities to try and the staff make everything a ton of fun. Explo is the place to try new things, because no matter what you try, you’ll really enjoy it and you might even want to keep doing it. Even if you start off not really liking something, the staff make you really love it. I am in this class that I didn’t think seemed too interesting at first but then we started doing some cool experiments and I started really liking it and now it’s one of my favorite classes here.
