Meet Jeffrey from China

English may be a second language for Jeffrey, but friendship is a universal language that he speaks fluently.

Casey Kim

English may be a second language for Jeffrey, but friendship is a universal language that he speaks fluently. He loves sharing tales of his travels around the world with the EXPLO community.

Today in my Chemistry in Action class we exploded watermelons. We put dry ice in a bottle and closed it, and put it in the watermelon. The bottle will break because the temperature is too high for the dry ice, so it will change into carbon dioxide, which expands until the bottle can’t hold it. I love chemistry, so back home I’ve gone to my mom’s university to do some cool experiments like with CuSO4, copper sulfate, and FeSO4, ferrous sulfate.

Because of the language barrier, it is more difficult to understand chemistry here, but it is no problem to talk with friends. It’s a really good and friendly community here that makes the students feel comfortable, even if we are not strong in English. People have really accepted me even though I sound different. Maybe my mind is a bit different from other countries so everyone thinks I am fun and interesting. Like I’ve eaten a worm before on a trip to a wild village in Malaysia, where it is a delicacy. I am an open mind, and I share my culture and mindset and things I’ve experienced travelling with others. And I also get to learn about America and other cool cultures here.
