As a first-timer at Explo at Wellesley, Irene is already impressing her peers and instructors through her innovative designs and stylish creations in her Costume, Hair + Make-up Design course. This designer and musician has high hopes to combine her two artistic passions by creating captivating costumes for characters on the stage.

This past week, we've been designing costumes from different plays or costumes from characters that are mashed up together. One exercise that we do for costumes is that we get two characters from very different lives, for example, a vampire and a queen. If you mashed them up together, you'd probably have this beautiful crown and dress on someone with these sharp fangs. It's really interesting combining completely unrelated things and seeing what you get.

I've never done any designing for any events yet, but next year there's a teacher that designs costumes for the high school plays [at my school], so I'm going to do my best to get involved. I really think taking hands-on courses like Costume, Hair + Make-up Design at Explo will give me my first shot at practicing for my future and help make me confident to make creative and amazing pieces next year.

When you first come to Explo, I think it's kind of intimidating to see all these kids from foreign countries that seem so different than you. But once you break down that barrier and find that you have so many things in common in your courses, Explo is the place that you'll always want to be.
