Meet Charlie from Massachusetts

Charlie from Mass talks about wanting to be a director

Ally Marcino

Charlie identifies his passion for movies as the most important thing to know about him. He hopes to grow up to be like his favorite directors and create a movie so he can leave his mark on the world.

First you should know that I love movies. That is the key detail of my life. I just love storytelling in general and I think the visual medium is the best for storytelling. I love comedy dramas and thrillers. I love watching movies, but even more than that, I want to grow up to be a director and a writer. I want to make movies on a Hollywood-level scale. I love Martin Scorsese, I love Steven Spielberg, and I love David Fincher. I was watching one of Martin Scorsese’s films, The Departed, on T.V. and it’s really excellent. I was thinking, “It must be such a cool job to make this movie. I should try that.”

Even before that, growing up watching Raiders of the Lost Arc and Star Wars and movies like that — it was always inspiring. I think the scale of them is just incredible. There is production design, there’s writing, there’s acting, there’s sound, there’s the score, and there are just all of these elements. The thought of being the director and having your footprint on all of these parts of the filmmaking process just seems so cool to me.

There’s a competition called the 48 Hour Film Project. My family and friends like to make short films every year for this competition. I help direct those and it’s so fun. My friend and I are working on something back home. It’s just a short film about us picking a movie on demand and the drama that unfolds from that. If I could make a movie on a Star Wars-level scale, I think I would do a biography, but one that intentionally really twisted the facts to make it really entertaining.

I am in Acting and Directing for the Camera here, and it’s a blast. I got to help direct a scene and that experience was just perfect. I have found other people here at Explo who love movies and the instructor, Joe, is awesome because he truly loves and knows movies.
