Cecilia is in the ninth grade and aspires to be a doctor. She's getting a feel for the field in her Medical Careers course, and discovering new interests and talents along the way.

My favorite course that I’m taking here is Medical Careers. Today was the first day and we just had an introduction, but we are going to learn everything that they do to you at the doctor’s. It’s really useful because I’m interested in pursuing a career in medicine, so I can already try some things out and see what the job is like.

I want to become an obstetrician. That’s the person who’s taking care of pregnancies and births. I think it’s a very challenging and important job; there's a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. But I feel like it can be very rewarding and amazing to help bring someone into the world. I’ve been interested in medicine for a long time and one day I want to study at the John Hopkins University.

I came to EXPLO to meet people from other countries and become more independent. What I like about it is that it’s not just a summer camp where you go into the wilderness and do what you’re told to do. You get to choose for yourself what you want to do. Most camps just tell you what activity your going to do next, but here you have the chance to choose what you like and really make your own experience. There’s a lot of room for experimenting and trying out different things and discovering your passions that way. I like that.
