This singing soprano is back for her third summer at Explo — she's been to the campuses of St. Mark's, Wheaton, and now, Wellesley. With ambitious dreams of becoming a famous singer, Avery is excited to hone her talents and try new techniques while at Explo this summer.

I use music and singing for everything, like to calm myself down or to pay attention. I'll even hum to myself in class and sing random words like, "do your homework," to motivate me to get it done. I don't always like writing or talking about how I feel, but I love singing about them. Music and songwriting help me get my feelings out into something I can enjoy.

When I listen to a song, I always like listening to the melody and then the lyrics, because I like putting the pieces together and figuring out what the words mean for different people. Sometimes I even change songs with my own lyrics to see if they fit better.

I'm really excited to be taking an A Cappella class and a Musical Theater class at Explo. I've been at Explo the past three summers, but I'm most excited to be at Wellesley because we get to go to The Vil, so I really think that is going to help me become really independent.

If I could give a piece of advice to someone who either wants to be a singer or is new to Explo, it'd be pretty similar: I'd say just go for it! Being a singer and being at Explo is all about being confident, expressing your feelings, and having fun.
