Things We Love: Why Summer Programs are a Good Idea

Child psychologist Michael Thompson believes that sending your children to an overnight summer program gives them a chance to mature, grow, and shake off some of those school year anxieties. We couldn't agree more.

According to Thompson, getting that chance to unfurl, be silly, and explore the world outside their known social circles and neighborhood isn't just beneficial to children, it is essential. In an article on CNN's website, Thompson says that camps and summer programs are:

"the closest thing to Hogwarts that kids are likely to get. ... All of children's literature knows that the adventures only begin when you're away from your parents. Every great children's story is driven by the child being away from parents, experiencing things on their own."

Harry Potter's situation may be unique, but, as Thompson states, in order for any child to be able to truly mature and grow, "Your parent has to open the door and let you walk out and find independence, experience it and become comfortable with it."
